Prize Money for the Indy 500 Winners – 1911 to 2025
The Indy 500 is each year the prime opportunity for teams to cash in big financially. Outside of the Indy 500, teams earn only very limited prize money. For every other IndyCar race, the winner receives a prize of around $30,000 (£23,100). Teams in the ‘Leader Circle’ will also receive around $1 million (£770,000) per full-time entry (up to three per team) in 2025.
A victory in the Indy 500 brings in more than all other prize money combined: in recent years, the winner has received a check worth around $4 million (more than £3 million)!
What the winner of an Indy 500 earns from their victory depends on a large number of factors. Each year, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway allocates a total prize purse based on revenue (sponsorship, ticket sales, etc.). For the 2025 Indy 500, the prize purse was $20,283,000 (£15,276,099)!
This pool is distributed among all the drivers who qualify for the race. There is a distinction between cars inside and outside the ‘Leader Circle’ program, with cars outside this program receiving significantly less. However, just qualifying for the race can still earn those cars around $100,000 (£77,000).
Many activities throughout the month of May offefr additional prize money, such as performance in certain practice sessions and qualifying. For example, taking pole position already brings in $100,000 (£77,000).
The total prize money for the winner is, therefore, a sum of all achievements the driver in question has earned throughout the month of May.
Just because the Indy 500 winner is handed the check doesn’t mean they will see that amount in their bank account the next day. Each IndyCar team has contractual agreements with its drivers on how the prize money is distributed. Typically, the majority of the prize money goes to the team.
A portion of the prize money that the team receives will be used for its own budget. However, it’s also common for a significant part to be shared among the staff. Many IndyCar team employees, especially engineers and mechanics, have bonuses outlined in their contracts based on performance. This varies by team, but you can be sure that mechanics and engineers won’t be worse off if their car wins the Indy 500!

The prize money for the winner has seen significant development over the years: while Ray Harroun won just $14,500 (£11,165) for his victory in the 1911 Indy 500, Josef Newgarden took home the highest amount in 2022 with nearly $4.3 million (£3,3 million).
The prize money has fluctuated significantly over the years, with the race’s popularity and the state of the U.S. economy playing a major role. Despite Josef Newgarden receiving the highest payout in 2024, the prize money in recent years has not been at its peak when adjusted for inflation (though very close). In this regard, Helio Castroneves made the best deal in 2009: his Indy 500 win earned his team $3,048,005. Adjusted for 2024 prices, this would amount to nearly $4.4 million (£3,4 million)!
In the table below, you’ll find all the prize amounts awarded to the winners since the first race in 1911, including inflation adjustments to 2024 prices and conversions to Pounds.
